On sharing knowledge and fostering "open science"

The crucial importance of science and technology its accurate peer reviewed dissemination, has once again been demonstrated during the current pandemic. Thus COVID-19 pandemic together with inevitable energy transition required by climate change, lead us to consider issue scientific technical communication, both for written papers proceedings that have largely moved online (but not always in open access), various types seminars, workshops, symposia frequently involve air travel substantial CO2 impact. Online meetings become recently very popular, as well repositories publications, themselves a significant CO2---as environmental---impact, due massive use electricity information communication technologies (ICT) environmentally unfriendly manufacturing processes decommissioning ICT equipment. Presented is broad overview these aspects, some recommendations regarding future organization including: (1) peer-reviewed journals access; (2) face seminars symposia, meetings, maintain serendipity direct human contact while reducing need travel; (3) evaluation research academic staff dependence on publications their qualitative---rather than excessively quantitative---evaluation, where concept impact should include usefulness education, industry society; (4) role all aspects questions raised sustainability itself.
